The Invasion of Alexander the Great

Alexander, the son of Philip of Macedonia, is considered to be one of the ancient world's great conquerors. At the age of twenty, he ascended the throne in 335 BC. 

Alexander was attracted by the wealth of India. Just before the invasion of Alexander, there were many small rulers in northwest India, such as Ambhi of Taxila and Porus of the Jhelum region (Hydaspes).

  • The part of India which Alexander invaded is called the Punjab, or land of the five rivers. At that time it was ruled by a king called Porus.
  • He was overlord of the Punjab, and under him were many other princes. Some of these princes were ready to rebel against Porus, and they welcomed Alexander gladly. But Porus gathered a great army and came marching against the Greek invader.
